Science & Humanities Inquiry

At Valkstone Primary School, we believe in fostering curiosity and critical thinking across all areas of the curriculum. Science and Humanities are taught through collaboratively designed units that cumulatively build understanding from Prep to Year 6. Learning experiences scaffold students’ core knowledge and skills to enable them to enquire effectively into areas of interest and passion.

Units of work are designed around the big ideas and throughlines, and aim to address the essential questions asked by teachers and students. Guided Inquiry is used as students are led through:

  • Tuning in
  • Finding out
  • Sorting out
  • Going further
  • Making connections and
  • Taking action

Through partnership with The Inquiry Project, teachers have designed units of work that are engaging and encourage students to ask questions, investigate ideas and make discoveries. In science, students engage in hands-on experiments and research projects, while in humanities, they analyse primary sources and explore diverse perspectives.
